Congratulations, Hawkshaw

In honor of Huntingtonian Hawkshaw Hawkins' induction into the West Virginia Music Hall of Fame, here is one of his signature tunes, "The Sunny Side of the Mountain:"

Hawkins was probably the smoothest voice in county music until Jim Reeves came along. Though a few of his songs were a little raucous, most were somewhat quiet and full of meaning--kinda like country soul before that became popular.

That was a pretty rough day back there so many years ago, almost as bad as the one a few years before that took Holley, the Big Bopper and Valens. I remember both days well. We lost a lot of great potential music then.

Thanks for your tribute. It is well deserved.

Fortunately, the untimely musician deaths of my generation have been staggered: a suicide here, a shooting or drug overdose there, but no "big one" that wiped out multiple artists.
